Message from Hannah: Breakfast in Swaziland

Message from Hannah: Breakfast in Swaziland

Dear Friends,

At this time of the year, I want to share with you a story about our work and invite you to help us move forward.

Last month I visited Swaziland, a small country – slightly smaller than New Jersey – in southern Africa with a population of about 1.3 million. Swaziland is the country with the world’s highest known HIV/AIDS prevalence rate. More than one-quarter of the adult population has been infected by HIV/AIDS and 30% of all children are either orphans or have only one parent. Many children are head of households, taking care of younger siblings.  And many suffer from hunger, are malnourished and themselves HIV-positive.

I visited several public schools that have been selected to participate in a new Palms for Life Fund project, funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). USAID’s grant to Palms for Life Fund is our largest grant ever. Thanks to the grant, we will install water systems in 120 schools, build latrines and establish vegetable gardens–all benefitting 40,000 children.

During my visit I was extremely saddened by seeing so many children showing visible signs of malnutrition and extreme poverty. Many were barefoot, their uniform was torn, and what was most alarming was to see their dried lips. These kids were hungry and thirsty.  Many arrive at school hungry and when they are served a lunch with rice and beans, this is to be their only meal for the entire day.

So when I met with the Principal Secretary of the Ministry of Education we discussed how to ensure that food and water are made available to these kids, every day. I insisted on adding breakfast: A warm porridge kind of drink to be served to the kids as they arrive in school. Many are coming from broken homes where there is no food.

As I traveled home, I promised myself to do all that I can to bring breakfast to these kids.

And here is my appeal to you: I want to invite you to help give these kids a warm cereal drink, as they get to school so that they can start learning. The cost of this drink is no more than $0.25 a day per child or $45 per child for an entire school year!

Please join Palms for Life Fund in this commitment. You can select to feed one, or two, or more kids. This is how we create a Global Alliance to End Poverty. Let’s just do it!

Thank you so much for touching the lives of these wonderful children. Every cent counts!

We wish you all joyful holidays.
